I was in 7th grade during the last days of Vietnam war. On April 26th , 1975, when Saigon was breathing her last breath, we students still went to Gia Long school in our uniforms. My dad was a South Vietnamese navy officer, so his subordinate soldier helped out by picking me up and dropping me off at school every day. That day when the soldier picked me up from Gia Long, instead of coming home, he drove straight to Port of Saigon, where I was happy to meet the rest of my family on a Vietnamese navy ship. From Saigon we crossed open water all the way to Subic Bay, the Philippines. My family arrived at a refugee camp in the US East Coast (Pennsylvania), then eventually moved to the West Coast.
